Sarah Jessica Parker wins Carol Burnett Award at Golden Globes and Cheers to the Universe

“Do you really want to be in a TV show?” the actress recalled asking her when she first received the script for Parker’s role as Carrie Bradshaw in 1990s “Sex and the City.” She went on to win six Golden Globe Awards and two Emmy Awards.

“It’s an honor and a dream to call myself an actor,” Parker said in accepting the award.

Parker received a tearful tribute from longtime “Sex and the City” costar Kristin Davis and joined an international crowd led by Colman Domingo in a toast to Bradshaw’s favorite drink, which sparked a craze on the show.

The Carol Burnett Award recognizes “outstanding contributions to television, both on and off the screen.”

Recent honoree Ted Danson and his namesake, 2019 inaugural honoree Burnett, kicked off the night of honors.

“My dear Sarah,” Burnett, 92, said into a microphone on her desk. “Welcome to the club.”

Parker also talked about the time creator Darren Star offered her Sex and the City, and what it meant to take it. The original HBO show became a cultural phenomenon. It ran for six seasons, spawning two feature films and the recent reboot series “Just Like That…”

“I met Carrie Bradshaw, Charlotte York, Samantha Jones and Miranda Hobbes,” Parker said. “I spent 25 years with the most brilliant group of women and actors, and we treated all of New York like CBS City and the streets like Studio 33.”

Broderick also talked about how Sex and the City changed their lives.

“The president,” he said, “comes to our house.”

Parker is 60 but has been in acting for more than 50 years, including playing the title role in Broadway’s “Annie” as a child. She said a big part of her inspiration came from watching her mother and future stepfather perform in an Ohio production of “The Mattress Fairy Tale.” The play was Burnett’s big break on Broadway, and Parker later starred in the Broadway revival.

“I thought, Oh my gosh, yes, that’s what I want more than anything,” she said.

Mirren, 80, won an Oscar for her role as Elizabeth II in 2006’s “The Queen,” has also won three Golden Globes and is set to win a fourth this year for her role in the drama series “MobLand.” In 2003, she was awarded the title of Dame Dame of the British Empire.

The DeMille Award dates back to 1952, when it was awarded to the legendary filmmaker himself. Other winners include Walt Disney, Judy Garland, Oprah Winfrey and Tom Hanks.
