Samsung releases Galaxy Time watch face; will tell you the time on Mars

By | Published | No Comments

Samsung released a new watch face for Galaxy Watch devices on March 31 that tells users the current time on different planets in the solar system. Known as Galaxy Time, the South Korean tech giant revealed that the watch faces were developed in partnership with the European Space Agency (ESA). There are eight dials in total, corresponding to the eight planets. In addition to the current time on the planet, these dials share other relevant data about these celestial bodies.

Announcing new watch faces postal “In this project, ‘Galaxy’ really speaks for itself,” Mario Winter, vice president of marketing at Samsung Electronics Germany, told his German newsroom. Agency (ESA) has collaborated to develop a watch face that gives Samsung Galaxy users a new and unique way to explore the solar system. With scientific data provided by the ESA to Samsung developers, Galaxy Time users will have the opportunity to easily go beyond Our home planet, seeing neighboring planets.”

ESA scientist Melanie Hale explained that although different planets in the solar system are part of the same star, the Sun, they orbit the sun and spin on their axes at different speeds than Earth. Therefore, the days, hours and seconds we experience are completely different for the other seven planets – Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

To develop the Galaxy Time watch face, Samsung used ESA data on the speed and orbits of eight planets around the sun. The times users see are not necessarily the exact times of these planets, but rather their representation relative to Earth time. In addition to time, the faces provide interesting insights into the solar system, such as the distance of neighboring planets from the Sun and Earth, the number of moons, their exact position per second, and planetary seasons.

Samsung revealed that the creativity behind the watch face came from German creative agency Leo Burnett, while Berlin-based creative brand consultancy Metadesign led the development of Galaxy Time. These watch faces are compatible with all Galaxy Watch devices running Wear OS (i.e. Galaxy Watch 4 or higher).
