secure call The campaign has raised £35,000 in donations thanks to two exceptionally generous readers, who anonymously contributed £25,000 and £10,000 respectively.

With the help of our readers, Independentalong with donations missing peopleThe aim is to raise funds to launch a new, free call service which will provide confidential support, guidance and a route to safety for children in crisis.

The donation comes amid an extraordinary first week of calls, texts and high-profile support that has seen the SafeCall campaign make strong inroads towards its overall target.

Peter Boxell, whose son Lee Boxell went missing when he was 15, said: “When my son Lee went missing, our lives changed forever. Decades have passed, and we still don’t have the answers we need.

“I have always believed that if we can help even one young person stay safe, or prevent one family from going through my pain, it is worth every effort.

“The SafeCall service has the potential to do exactly that – to step in early and give vulnerable young people a safe place to go before something terrible happens to them.”

In line with nearly two decades of advocacy efforts, former England captain Sir David is backing the campaign and has called for public support to help launch the service.

Posting on Instagram, she said: “It is heartbreaking that 70,000 children go missing in the UK every year. Please support.” Independent And Missing People UK will help launch Safe Call, a new 24-hour lifeline to provide vulnerable and missing young people with safety.”

Together sir stephen fry And Dame Esther RentzenAuthor Sir Ian has also joined in support of the campaign, having spent much of his life writing crime novels and learning about the difficult realities of a missing person’s case through his research.

Money raised from the campaign will go directly to help vulnerable young people access help and support through a service which will be designed with the input of young people.

Mr Boxell said: “A confidential, understanding voice on the other end of the phone can make a big difference.

“For families like mine, knowing that such a service exists will provide real hope – that others can be spared the heartache and uncertainty we continue to live with.

“I am deeply grateful Independent and Missing People to recognize how important this service can be and to help raise awareness. With enough public support and donations, we can make SafeCall a reality – and give young people a lifeline that could just save lives.
