The 1981 film Sattam Oru Iruttarai starring Vijayakanth celebrated its 43rd release anniversary on February 14, 2024. The film is considered one of the best works of filmmaker SA Chandrasekhar and has been remade in multiple languages across the country. On the 43rd anniversary of its release, let’s dive into what the film represents and how it came to be.

Sattam Oru Irutale is one of Vijayakanth’s earliest works and delves into themes of law, order and revenge. This is the second film directed by legendary filmmaker SA Chandrasekhar. According to reports, Chandrasekhar was inspired by the dialogues of the 1949 film Velaikari to name his film Sattam Oru Iruttarai. Despite facing rejections from more than two dozen people, producer Vadalur S Chidambaram kept his faith and made the story a reality.

The film tells the story of a young boy who witnesses the murder of his father by three criminals and then seeks revenge. Meanwhile, his sister becomes a police officer aiming to catch the murderer through legal means.

The film is written by SA Chandrasekhar’s wife Shoba and stars Vijayakanth, Poornima Devi, Vasumathi, Sangili Murugan and Nithin. Produced by Vadalur S Chidambaram under Vadularan Joints, the film has music composed by Shankar-Ganesh, cinematographer by DD Prasad and editor by B Gowtham Raj. It was released on February 14, 1981 and was later remade into Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi. In 2012, a Tamil remake also starred Taman Kumar.

The Hindi remake Andhaa Kaanoon was released in 1983. Directed by T Rama Rao, the film stars Rajinikanth and Hema Malini and has a cameo appearance by Amitabh Bachchan.

Sattam Oru Irutale remains an important milestone in the history of Tamil cinema, showcasing Vijayakanth’s early talent and Chandrasekhar’s directorial skills. Despite initial challenges, the film’s legacy reflects its compelling narrative and lasting impact on generations of audiences.
