Russian missile strikes apartment in central Ukraine, killing 3 and injuring 38

Video footage shows fire engulfing the top of an apartment building

Krivoy Rog, Ukraine:

A Russian missile hit two apartment buildings in the central Ukrainian city of Krivoy Rog on Tuesday, killing three people and injuring at least 38 others as rescue teams searched for survivors late at night in the rubble.

Among the injured were ten children.

Dnepropetrovsk region governor Serhiy Lysak estimated the number of injured at 28 adults and 10 children, later saying the rescue operation was complete

“Two buildings were hit, one with five floors and one with nine floors,” Lysak wrote on Telegram. “The number of injured is increasing, as is the number of injured children.”

Alexander Verkul, head of the Krivorog Military Administration, said the city was hit by at least three missiles.

At least five adults and one child being treated at the hospital were in critical condition, he said. After an apartment-by-apartment search, nine people were rescued and all fires on site were brought under control.

Video footage showed fire engulfing the top of an apartment building as rescue teams pulled the injured from the shattered entrance to the building.

With balconies nearly destroyed and windows blown out, the crane followed the floodlights to reach the upper floors of the building.

“Emergency services and concerned residents are rescuing residents trapped in apartments and continue to search for people who may be under the rubble,” Interior Minister Ihor Klimenko wrote.

Krivoy Rog has been a frequent target of Russian attacks.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who was born and raised in the city, praised the rescue teams in a telegram and vowed that Russia would hold them accountable.

“Our cities and villages suffer similar attacks every day. Ukraine loses people every day to Russia’s evil,” he wrote. “It is impossible to stop, for a day, a week, let alone a month, to support the defense of life and save people from horror.”
