Research from the Center for Strategic and International Studies shows Conflict is slow and deadlyand comes ahead of the fourth anniversary of Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24.
Russia suffered 1.2 million casualties between February 2022 and December 2025, including as many as 325,000 dead soldiers, the report said. “Since World War II, no major country has suffered such a high number of casualties in any war.” The author said.
Estimates of Ukraine’s smaller army and population ranged from 500,000 to 600,000 casualties, including as many as 140,000 deaths.

Putin has repeatedly stated that unless Kiev gives up in the peace agreement, Russia will seize Ukraine’s entire Donbas region by force, and Moscow’s army controls 90% of the land in the region.
This weekend, the two countries will hold a third round of talks brokered by the United States aimed at ending the war.

“It’s still a bridge that we have to cross,” Rubio said during a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing. “It’s still a gap, but at least we’ve been able to narrow it down to a core issue, which could be a very difficult issue.”
