Russia says bombing attempt failed

Russia’s Federal Security Service said on Thursday it had shot dead a Belarusian man who planned to blow up an administrative building on behalf of Ukraine in Russia’s northern Karelia region.

Russia’s Federal Security Service said the man planned to use an improvised explosive device to launch an attack in the city of Olonec, about 250 kilometers from the border with Russia and Finland.

The agency shared a video showing police closing in on a building in a remote area and opening fire, later showing a body on the floor.

Ukrainian officials did not immediately comment on the matter.

A loud explosion rang out in the southern Ukrainian city of Odessa on Wednesday as Ukrainian President Zelensky and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis concluded a visit to the war-torn region.

The Greek leader said officials were getting into their cars when they heard the explosion, which he said was a “vivid reminder” that Odessa is gripped by a war with Russia.

Mitsotakis said it was one thing to hear about the war, “but another thing to experience it firsthand.”

Zelensky said that the explosion killed an unknown number of people and injured many others. “You see who we’re dealing with, they don’t care where they attack,” he told reporters.

Zelensky regularly visited frontline cities and military units during the war, keeping his visits secret until his departure. Foreign leaders have made multiple trips to Ukraine, often to the capital Kiev, sometimes having to take refuge in shelters when air raid sirens sounded.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen took to the X social media platform, formerly Twitter, to condemn what she said was a “despicable attack” during the Greek leader’s visit. She called it Russia’s “new terror attempt.”

Zelensky showed Mitsotakis the devastation in Odessa, where debris from a Russian drone hit an apartment building on March 2, killing 12 people, including Includes 5 children.
