Russia’s Belgorod region has evacuated 5,000 children from its border with Ukraine after weeks of deadly bombing in Kiev, the governor said on Saturday.
Regional authorities said last week that 9,000 minors would be moved to other areas after a series of cross-border shelling and drone strikes killed more than a dozen civilians.
“5,000 of our children have left the region. Yesterday, 1,300 children arrived in St. Petersburg, Bryansk and Makhachkala,” Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said.
Children who remain in the region and live in cities close to the border, including the region’s capital Belgorod, will switch to remote learning next month, he added.
He said businesses forced to close due to the attacks would be allowed to reopen as long as “staff are trained in first aid” and windows are boarded up.
Since the conflict began more than two years ago, Belgorod has been repeatedly targeted by what Russian officials call indiscriminate attacks by Ukraine.
A Ukrainian drone crashed into a multi-story apartment building in the city of Belgorod on Friday, killing one man and injuring two others, including his wife, Gradkov said.
