Russia dismisses US warning about nuclear capabilities in space: report

Moscow:

Russia on Thursday dismissed U.S. warnings about its new space nuclear capabilities as a “malicious fabrication” and a White House ploy to get U.S. lawmakers to approve more funding to counter Moscow.

The United States has informed Congress and European allies of new intelligence related to Russia’s nuclear capabilities that could pose an international threat, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters on Wednesday.

New capabilities related to Russia’s attempts to develop space-based weapons do not pose an imminent threat to the United States, sources said.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said he would not comment on the substance of the report until the White House released details. But he said Washington’s warning was clearly an effort to get Congress to approve more funding.

“It is clear that the White House is trying by any means possible to encourage Congress to vote on an appropriations bill,” TASS quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying.

“We will see what tricks the White House will use,” Peskov said.

According to the TASS news agency, Sergey Ryabkov, Russia’s deputy foreign minister and a key figure in Moscow’s arms control issues, accused the United States of “malicious fabrication.”

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine – which Moscow calls a special military operation – has triggered the largest confrontation between the West and Russia since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. Both Moscow and Washington have warned of the risk of conflict between NATO and Russia.

Russia and the United States, by far the largest nuclear powers, have both lamented the gradual unraveling of arms control treaties designed to slow the Cold War arms race and reduce the risk of nuclear war.

The United States views China as its biggest competitor and Russia as its biggest nation-state threat, while President Joe Biden believes that this century will be defined by an existential competition between democracies and autocracies.

Russia says the United States’ post-Cold War dominance is collapsing, with Washington seeking chaos around the world for years while ignoring the interests of other major powers.
