Russia detains journalist for two months over links to Alexei Navalny's group

Moscow, Russia:

A Moscow court on Friday ordered the pretrial detention on “extremism” charges of a journalist who covered the trial of late Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny.

Prosecutors said Antonina Kravtsova, a journalist for the independent SotaVision media, was involved in an “extremist organization” on charges that carry a maximum penalty of six years in prison.

The Kremlin banned Navalny’s group as an “extremist” group before his death and cracked down on his remaining allies in Russia.

“The Basman District Court ordered Antonina Kravtsova to be remanded in custody for two months,” the Moscow Court Press Service posted on Telegram.

Kravtsova, also known as Antonina Favorskaya, frequently covered Navalny’s trial. She filmed his court hearing the day before he died at the Arctic prison colony last month.

She was arrested on her way out of jail earlier this week, having been jailed for 10 days for breaching a police order.

She was initially detained hours after visiting Navalny’s grave south of Moscow during Russia’s presidential election.

Prosecutors said Kravtsova posted material banned in Russia on Navalny’s social media platforms.

Kravtsova told the court on Friday that the case was in retaliation for an article she wrote about how Navalny was “tortured” in prison, SotaVision reported.

Navalny’s wife, Yulia Navalnaya, who shared the article on X, called it an “important text.”

Navalny’s team condemned the case and said on Friday that the Russian regime was trying to create a “new wave of fear” among critics.
