A South Korean citizen has been arrested in Russia on suspicion of espionage, state news agency TASS reported on Monday.
The man, Park Won-soon, was detained in the Far Eastern city of Vladivostok and then transferred to Moscow for “investigative operations,” Tass news agency said, citing law enforcement agencies.
State news media said it was the first such case against a South Korean citizen. It did not provide any details about the nature of the alleged espionage activity.
South Korea’s foreign ministry said in a statement that the South Korean consulate had been providing assistance since learning of the arrests. The company declined to provide further details as the matter is currently under investigation.
Russia considers South Korea an “unfriendly” country because Seoul supports Western sanctions against Moscow over the war in Ukraine.
At the same time, Russia has forged closer ties with North Korea, which the United States says is supplying Moscow with munitions for use in the war. North Korea and Russia deny this, although they have pledged to increase military cooperation.
