Jaipur, Nov 19 (IANS) Tension prevailed on the Rajasthan University campus on Wednesday after police lathi-charged students protesting against alleged irregularities in the examination results and evaluation process.
Protests were seen on the campus after police detained eight students, including student leader Shubham Rewad, during a demonstration on Tuesday.
The students allege that the university administration has significantly increased the revaluation fee, which is putting additional financial burden on them. He claimed that many students were being deliberately failed by one mark, forcing them to apply for revaluation and pay increased fees.
During the demonstration, more than half a dozen students including student leader Kamal Chaudhary were detained.
According to the students, the protest was symbolic: many wore garlands made of currency notes to highlight that their claim to be “not promoted” and the exorbitant fees associated with the revaluation processes is unjust.
He alleged that when he demanded accountability from the university administration, officials responded with force instead of talks.
In protest, many girl students climbed in front of the police vehicle to stop it from moving and raised slogans against the police.
The protests intensified as students raised slogans outside the administrative block and the Vice-Chancellor’s office, with some climbing onto the roof of the building.
Police intervened to disperse the crowd and detained several protesters. Student leaders condemned the police action, arguing that voicing concerns about academic irregularities “has been made a crime.”
He accused the police of acting as a “security blanket” for the university administration instead of ensuring the rights of students.
The protesters claim that the university is charging extra fees as well as illegal fees for revaluation of semester exam papers. They say that instead of addressing these concerns, officials chose to forcefully silence peacefully protesting students.
“If peaceful protest is considered a wrongdoing within democratic norms, what is left of the rights and freedoms of students?” a protesting student asked.
