Jabalpur, Nov 1 (IANS) Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale on Saturday said the caste-based census should serve its real purpose and should not be politically motivated, adding that the Sangh does not work on the basis of caste.
Hosabale made this statement while addressing the press at the organization’s three-day marathon session in Jabalpur on Saturday, which was attended by more than 400 top officials including Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat.
Answering some more questions on caste counting, Hosabale said that caste-based comments are made only to secure votes.
He stressed that unity and harmony are essential for the progress of the country.
The senior RSS functionary said that there is still backwardness among various castes in the society and there is a need to empower them.
He said that caste census data is useful to ensure benefits of government schemes.
“RSS does not work on the basis of caste, but wherever data is useful for the country, it should be collected,” he said. “The Supreme Court had already observed that this could be done if necessary,” he said.
Addressing the press conference after the executive meeting, the RSS general secretary also said that apart from spiritual organizations, there are many castes and sects in the Hindu society.
He said, “To strengthen self-confidence in the society, the feeling of social harmony should increase.”
Meanwhile, Hosabale also pointed to several other challenges, especially increasing drug addiction among the youth.
He said, “Medicines are also being sold near institutions like IIMs and schools. Efforts are needed at the administrative, religious and social levels for the safety of the youth.”
A meeting of the RSS National Executive was held in Jabalpur to discuss the programs to be held to commemorate 100 years of the Sangh and other national issues.
