Bhubaneswar, Oct 10 (IANS) The Odisha Cabinet, in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Friday, approved a new state sector scheme called Swachh Odisha, allocating Rs 1,600 crore over five years (FY 2025-26 to FY 2029-30) to integrate and strengthen sanitation initiatives in urban areas across the state.
According to an official statement, “The launch of ‘Swachh Odisha’ aims to simplify the processes related to project implementation, funding and monitoring by consolidating various sanitation initiatives into one integrated scheme.”
The plan aims to bring existing sanitation initiatives – such as solid waste management, liquid waste management and urban septage systems – into an integrated framework.
This integration is expected to improve efficiency through better coordination, simplify implementation processes and ensure smooth funding and monitoring operations.
The Swachh Odisha initiative underlines the commitment of the state government to create clean and garbage-free cities in the state.
It aims to empower urban local bodies (ULBs) by bridging the funding gap and aiming for widespread saturation in all urban sanitation areas. The scheme will also complement the ongoing Swachh Bharat initiative, thereby further strengthening the desired outcomes in urban sanitation and hygiene.
Officials said the scheme will be implemented in phases, with a focus on broad coverage and measurable impact across the urban landscape of Odisha.
It is noteworthy that the Odisha Cabinet, during its meeting chaired by CM Majhi on Friday, approved 15 proposals of ten departments including the approval of Odisha Public Trust Ordinance, 2025.
In a major decision, the Odisha Cabinet approved the proposal for procurement scheme of Rs 163 crore for printing paper for supply of free textbooks to students in government, aided and private unaided schools for the 2026-27 academic session.
