Rain expected to hit Rose Parade for first time in 20 years Southern Californiaa revered New Year’s Day event that attracts thousands of spectators and is watched by millions on television.

Over Christmas, storms caused flooding, mudslides and other disasters in the region. There is now a 100% chance of rain on Thursday pasadenathis National Weather Service explain.

“We try not to say that word here,” joked Pasadena tournament spokesperson Candy Carlson. Roseis the organization of the 137th Annual Rose Parade, which precedes the Rose Bowl College Football Playoffs.

Arctic air is expected to cover much of the eastern two-thirds of the country, the weather service said.

In New York City, it’s not unusual for forecasters to predict that temperatures in Times Square on New Year’s Eve will drop into the 30s Fahrenheit (about zero Celsius). There may be light rain las vegasseveral casinos will launch fireworks from their rooftops.

Temperatures will drop into the mid-30s when the notes of twinkling lights drop at midnight in the Tennessee city during a New Year’s Eve event in a Nashville park. Temperatures in New Orleans will be in the mid-40s, and free concerts and fireworks will be held along the Mississippi River.

Carlson said it has only rained 10 times in the Rose Parade’s history, and none since 2006.

Unusual wet weather is unlikely to deter floats, marching bands, entertainers and others from taking part. Carlson said float riders will be equipped with rain gear if necessary and tow trucks will be on standby in case of mechanical issues.

The audience also needs to be prepared. Umbrellas are not allowed in ticketed parade seating areas, but the ban does not include those simply lining up along the nearly 6-mile (10-kilometer) route. Roadside camping — without tents — begins at noon Wednesday. Rain is also expected that day.

“The theme of last year’s parade was ‘Best Day Ever!’ and it was the worst six days later,” Pasadena city spokesperson Lisa Derderian said, referring to the devastating Eaton wildfire in Los Angeles County. “We wanted to start the new year on a high note.” Hopefully nature will cooperate with the weather. “
