On Tuesday, Parliament was informed that rooftop solar systems have been installed in about 23.96 lakh homes, which is about 23.96 per cent of the one crore homes targeted under the PM Solar Scheme.

Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha that the PM Surya Ghar: Free Electricity Scheme (PMSG: MBY) is a demand-driven scheme, wherein all residential consumers in the country with grid-connected electricity connections of local discoms can avail the benefits of the scheme by applying on the national portal of the scheme.

He told the House that against the target of covering one crore houses in the residential sector with installation of rooftop solar system under the solar scheme by the financial year 2026-27, a total of 23,96,497 houses have been installed with rooftop solar system, which is about 23.96 per cent of the target.

The Minister told the House that the scheme is progressing well and as of December 3, 2025, a total of 53,54,099 applications have been received on the national portal and 19,17,698 rooftop solar systems have been installed covering 23,96,497 households across the country.

He said that under the scheme, a target has been set to cover 1 crore families by 2025-26 including 2026-27.

In another reply to the House, the minister said the e-scheme aims to install rooftop solar power in one crore homes in the residential sector by financial year 2026-27 with an outlay of Rs 75,021 crore.

The scheme is demand-driven and there is no state-wise allocation of targets under the scheme, he said.

A total of 7075.78 MW rooftop solar capacity has been installed in the country under the scheme in the residential sector by December 2, 2025.

PMSG: To ensure the quality and reliability of solar equipment used for rooftop solar plant installation under the MBY scheme, the Ministry has prescribed minimum technical specifications and standards for solar modules, inverters and other balance of plant components.

The installations are inspected by local DISCOM officials. Further, the vendors will have to mandatorily maintain the RTS plant installed by them for a period of 5 years from the date of commissioning.

Therefore, adequate checks have been put into the scheme to ensure the quality of solar panels, the minister said.

Further, he told the House that third party assessment of RTS installations of at least 1 per cent of installed systems is being conducted on a pan-India basis to ensure the quality of the installation.

In another reply to the House, the minister informed that for individual households, the Central Financial Assistance (CFA) is Rs 30,000 per kWp for the first 2 kWp and Rs 18,000 per kWp for additional one kWp.

The subsidy for an individual household is capped at 3 kW rooftop solar plant capacity.

CFA for Group Housing Societies/Residential Welfare Associations (GHS/RWAs) is Rs 18,000 per kWh with a capacity limit of 500 kW for rooftop solar plant.

In case of special category states/Union Territories including Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, States of North Eastern Region, Andaman-Nicobar and Lakshadweep, the CFA is 10 per cent higher.
