“I was two years old when I lost my dad, and as I got older, I began to realize how hard it would have been for him to be there for us — and, in the meantime, to continue Dad’s legacy that he and Dad had built together,” he told Carson as he began to cry. “I struggled a lot with losing my father, and she always made sure my father was present in our lives. I wanted her to know how proud my father would be of her.”
During the dance, Terry finally joined in and she smiled sweetly and held her son’s hand.

When it came time to hear the judge’s comments, Bruno Tonioli and Derek Hough both cried and told Robert how proud his father would be of him.
Tonioli said, “Robert – he’s looking at you, kid, and he’s smiling.” “You gave us your entire heart and soul. All I can say is that it was a true expression of eternal love.”

“I have as much love for you guys as I do for you guys,” said Hough, who took home the Mirrorball trophy in Season 21 with Robert’s sister Bindi Irwin. “Man, I’m so proud of you. I’m really proud, you’ve grown into an amazing person, and the world needs an Erwin family.”
As the couple went to receive their scores from the judges, co-host Julianne Hough immediately hugged Robert and gave him a tissue while he continued to cry. The dance was dedicated not only to his own mother, Robert said, but to “all the mothers who don’t get the recognition they deserve.”
“This is for the single parents who work so hard every day to put one foot in front of the other. This is for the people who have lost someone, who feel lost. Keep going, and if you can, call your mom and tell her you love her.”
