Rob Edwards has been removed from office middlesbrough dugout for saturday championship clash with birmingham amid keen interest from wolves On his vacant managerial position.

Edwards did not lead Middlesbrough training on Friday and his pre-match press conference was cancelled, with the decision being taken not to reveal him to the media.

Independent Wolves were reported to have made a preliminary approach to Boro on Tuesday On the possible appointment of Edwards as their new head coach Vitor Pereira was sacked,

This approach was rejected by the Teesside club. But it now looks increasingly likely that Edwards, who took charge of Middlesbrough in June, will move to Molineux, with Boro opting to remove him from matchday duties for the Riverside match.

The 42-year-old, who played more than 100 games at Molineux between 2004 and 2008, briefly served as interim manager in 2016 before going on to manage Forest Green Rovers and Watford.

His most successful spell came in charge of Luton between January 2022 and January 2025, leading the club to relegation. Premier LeagueThe club were relegated from the top tier after finishing 20th in the Championship earlier this year.

Edwards is believed to be on Wolves’ shortlist following Pereira’s sacking, although the club would have to pay significant compensation to Middlesbrough to secure his appointment.

Wolves initially looked likely to re-hire former boss Gary O’Neill before dropping out of the race to take overEdwards has since emerged as a top target.

Wolves have struggled this season after losing top talents including Matheus Cunha during the summer transfer window, and they currently sit bottom of the league with just two points from 10 matches.

The decision to sack Pereira comes just weeks after he signed a new three-year contract following a winless start to the Premier League following a Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Chelsea at the end of last month.

The club are currently eight points adrift of safety, with a tough schedule ahead of them over the next few weeks including trips to Chelsea, Aston Villa and league leaders Arsenal.
