Rob Edwards has revealed he can’t risk future regrets by turning down a management opportunity wolvesdespite the exchange championship push with promotion middlesbrough for one Premier League Demotion fight.
The 42-year-old took charge at Boro, who are second in the second tier, at Wolves, who are currently bottom of the Premier League table.
The Molineux club have earned just two points from their opening 11 matches, already eight points short of safety.
Edwards has an important history with Wolves, making over 100 appearances for the club between 2004 and 2008.
He later returned in various coaching capacities, even serving as caretaker manager in 2016. His first match in charge will be against Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Speaking at a press conference, Edwards explained his decision: “I knew I was in a very good job at Middlesbrough. Great people and very good players who have performed well. So I’m aware of that. But it’s something I’ve wanted to do for a very long time.
“I didn’t know if the opportunity to become the head coach of this club would come to me again.
“I don’t want to look back in 10,15 or 20 years when I turned down the chance to manage Wolves in the Premier League. I didn’t want to regret it.”
He added, “I’m not going to lie, this has been my goal since I got a job under 18. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do.”
Addressing his departure from Middlesbrough, Edwards acknowledged his potential disappointment.
“I know they won’t be happy but I understand that. We were doing well but what should I do? Give me 30 more games and wait?” He asked question.
“The opportunity came along and it’s something I wanted to do. Sometimes in life you have to take care of yourself. It was difficult but this place pulled me into it.”
