New Delhi, Oct 17 (IANS) Former British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was enjoying local cuisine with his father and mother-in-law at a restaurant in central Delhi’s Bengali Market, a shop owner said on Friday as the VIP presence caught the attention of shoppers and diners in the prestigious business district.
“I packed some sweets in Bengali Sweets,” Sunak said at the NDTV World Summit 2025. She credited her mother-in-law, Rajya Sabha member Sudha Murthy, who is aware of popular places in Delhi, for suggesting restaurants to visit with her family.
She also later shared her plans to go shopping in Khan Market in Central Delhi.
While enjoying family time with his in-laws at Bengali Market, Sunak was seen greeting other diners and the owner of Bengali Sweet House.
Dressed in a white shirt, red necktie and formal trousers, Sunak sat on a chair at the restaurant table opposite his father-in-law, Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy, and his mother-in-law sat on a sofa to his left.
Curious onlookers can be seen filming and taking photos of special visitors from the restaurant’s large windows that overlook the illuminated, iconic market square.
The Bengali Sweet House, which Sunak and the Murthy family visited on Thursday evening, was established in 1937. Mandi House, just a short walk from the Bazaar, Delhi’s arts and theater district, is a popular hangout spot for tourists and artists, including Bollywood actors who graduated from the nearby National School of Drama.
Sunak is in Delhi to participate in the NDTV World Summit 2025, which focuses on the theme ‘Edge of the Unknown: Risk’. Resolution. Renewal.’ The two-day gathering is an invitation to venture beyond borders and boundaries – to explore the unfamiliar in search of a more conscious, collective future.
Earlier, Sunak had said that he has joined US tech giant Microsoft and AI startup Anthropic as senior advisors.
Sunak, who stepped down as leader of the opposition Conservative Party after its general election defeat last July, will continue to serve as a member of the British Parliament.
In a LinkedIn post, Sunak said that the income from the roles will be entirely donated to The Richmond Project, a charity he started with his wife Akshata Murthy.
