Srinagar, Oct 30 (IANS) The Jammu and Kashmir government on Thursday told the Assembly that colonies are being developed in various districts for economically weaker sections of the society to ease the housing problem.

The Government of Jammu and Kashmir has launched several housing projects under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) to address the growing problem of urban overcrowding.

The Housing and Urban Development Department gave this information to the Assembly on Thursday.

Responding to a starred question (No. 198) raised by senior NC MLA Ali Mohammad Sagar, the government said new housing colonies for economically weaker sections (EWS) are being developed in various districts of the Union Territory.

The reply said that 760 flats for EWS are under construction in Bhalwal, Jammu, while 304 flats are being built in Chakhad, Sundli, Udhampur.

The department further informed that Jammu and Kashmir Housing Board has identified state land in various districts for additional flat accommodation under PMAY (U) 2.0.

Land at 10 locations in the Union Territory has already been transferred to the Housing Board for development of housing colonies for the general public including EWS.

“Provision of affordable rental houses/flats is also being made under Affordable Rental Housing (ARH) for the urban poor in Jammu city,” the reply said.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah recently introduced a bill in the Legislative Assembly Rent Authority Regularization Bill to protect the interests of landlords and tenants and to provide a speedy decision mechanism for resolution of disputes and matters connected with them.

“The Bill has already been published in an extraordinary issue of the Official Gazette,” the Chief Minister had said while introducing the bill.

After this, Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather placed the bill before the House for consideration.
