A seven-storey apartment building in the northwestern Turkish city of Gebze collapsed on Wednesday morning, trapping five people under the debris.
Gebze Governor Ilhami Aktas told journalists that it has been confirmed that the people buried under the debris are members of the same family. It is not yet known whether there are any casualties or not.
Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate, or AFAD, teams are carrying out rescue operations at the spot.
state run Anadolu Agency The report said the cause of the collapse is currently unknown.
mayor Gebze Zinur Büyükgöz, speaking to local media, suggested that the collapse may be related to nearby metro construction.
Gebze is located along the North Anatolian Fault Line and was one of the main centers hit during the 1999 magnitude 7.6 earthquake, which killed an estimated 18,000 people in total.
