San Francisco:
Apple is in advanced talks with Google to use its powerful Gemini AI model on iPhones, Bloomberg reported on Monday.
The move, if confirmed and a deal completed, would answer one of the big questions about the iPhone maker’s artificial intelligence strategy, which has been criticized for lagging behind its tech giant rivals.
Google shares soared more than six percent after the news broke. Apple shares rose 2.5%.
According to Bloomberg, Apple is looking to work with Google to release the next iOS operating system, which may be used on the next generation of iPhones launched later this year.
Apple and Google have locked in a search engine partnership, with Google paying Apple tens of billions of dollars a year to have the search engine feature prominently on the iPhone.
The long-running search engine deal is facing a historic lawsuit from the U.S. Department of Justice over alleged antitrust violations.
Bloomberg reports that Apple has also held talks with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, to collaborate on generating artificial intelligence, but did not provide further details.
Apple CEO Tim Cook said last month that there will be major updates in artificial intelligence, although some observers may be disappointed that the company is working with other companies to develop artificial intelligence.
Baird analyst Colin Sebastian said: “For Google, any hypothetical deal with Apple would likely mean that they essentially ‘own’ the generation of artificial intelligence on mobile devices (Android + iOS) intelligent.”
He added: “It also means Apple may not be able to catch up with GenAI leaders, at least on the next generation of devices.”
