Report: Monty Williams agrees to six-year, $72M contract to coach Pistons

The Detroit Pistons have agreed to a six-year, $72 million deal to make Monty Williams their new head coach, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

The deal is expected to be finalized in the coming days, Charania adds.

Williams was fired by the Phoenix Suns two years after reaching the NBA Finals and a year after he was the overwhelming choice as the coach of the year.

Williams had great success in his four regular seasons in Phoenix, winning 63 per cent of his games. But three consecutive years of playoff frustration was likely too much for the Suns to overlook — especially after two straight years of Phoenix trailing by 30 points at halftime of elimination games at home.

Former Pistons head coach Dwane Casey announced at the end of the season that he was transitioning from the head coaching position to the front office.

The decision comes after the Pistons closed out their 2022-23 season with a 103-81 loss to the Chicago Bulls. The team finished with a league-worst 17-65 record.
