Graham Potter’s Chelsea and Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United are both in the race to sign Real Madrid playmaker Brahim Diaz.
That’s according to The Sunday Mirror (19/03, p77), who claim that Chelsea and Newcastle are ‘keeping tabs’ on Diaz’s situation.
Diaz is currently owned by Real Madrid but is coming towards the end of a three-year loan spell with AC Milan.
Milan allegedly have an option to buy Diaz for around £19million but Fabrizio Romano claims that Real are close to securing a new deal with the playmaker.
That makes this whole transfer situation a little confusing; is Diaz staying in Milan, heading back to Madrid or possibly being sold on elsewhere for more money?
The Mirror claim that Chelsea and Newcastle are both keen and Real would be seeking £30million from one of the English clubs.
Diaz’s situation seems pretty complex but that isn’t stopping Chelsea and Newcastle sniffing around a potential summer deal.
Who is Chelsea and Newcastle United target Brahim Diaz?
Diaz emerged with hometown club Malaga but decided to leave for a big move to Manchester City as a teenager.
Big things were expected of Diaz at City but he only ever made 15 first-team appearances for the club.
Real Madrid pounced in 2019, but Diaz’s first-team chances didn’t exactly improve, respiring just 21 first-team outings.
Diaz has headed off to Italy for first-team action and has now bagged 16 goals and 10 assists in 109 games for Milan.
The 23-year-old clearly has plenty of talent in his locker and there is some real untapped potential there.
Hailed as ‘incredible’ for his commitment to training by Pep Guardiola, Diaz hasn’t quite lived up to his potential just yet but maybe Graham Potter or Eddie Howe can unlock it.
Diaz faces a big call over his international future as he could switch from Spain to Morocco in the coming weeks.
A decision over his club future will then be on the horizon with Milan, Real, Chelsea and Newcastle all involved in a fascinating battle for his services.
