Chandigarh, Oct 21 (IANS) Haryana Director General of Police (DGP) OP Singh, along with other senior officers, paid tribute to the supreme sacrifice of 191 martyrs by laying a wreath at the Police Martyrs Memorial at Police Lines in Panchkula on the occasion of Police Memorial Day on Tuesday.
Expressing condolences, Haryana DGP Singh said that whenever a police personnel sacrifices his life, a mountain of difficulties falls on the family. In an instant, the trajectory of their lives changes – emotional and financial challenges emerge simultaneously.
In such difficult times, it is our biggest duty to stand firmly with the bereaved family. In the same spirit, Haryana Police has made a provision to provide government jobs and financial assistance up to Rs 1 crore to the dependents of the martyrs so that their livelihood continues honorably and no child is deprived of education or a better future.
“Martyrdom is considered the highest form of sacrifice,” DGP Singh said.
He emphasized that through imagination and sensitivity, “we must build a civilization where the lion and the goat can drink water from the same stream, symbolizing the balance between power and peace”.
He said, “It is natural for a lion to be proud of its strength; a goat should not lament its helplessness. There are some criminal elements in the society who have the tendencies of wolves and foxes, who are driven by violence and selfish motives. Such people should be dealt with firmly and decisively.”
The DGP said that those “who consider violence a means of progress are the enemies of civilization. Our fight with them is not ideological but legal. We are people who follow the path of law, and our policy is very clear – tit for tat.”
“The police will not step back if a criminal even fires a bullet; we will ensure justice and security through all possible action.”
He said that the police deeply respect those warriors who stand firm on the battlefield and sacrifice their lives instead of retreating.
“These true sons of the soil keep the system alive by their bravery and sacrifice.”
Lastly, DGP Singh said that Haryana Police deeply understands the pain of the families of their martyred comrades.
He said, “We salute those brave mothers who gave birth to such brave sons who sacrificed their lives for the country.”
“Together we will make Haryana stronger, safer and more vulnerable, so that the sacrifice of our martyrs continues to inspire generations.”
On October 21, 1959, while patrolling on the Indo-Tibetan border in the Ladakh region, ten brave soldiers of the Central Reserve Police Force were ambushed by Chinese soldiers and martyred. Since then, 21 October is celebrated as Police Memorial Day every year in his memory.
