Jammu, 23 May: The Jammu and Kashmir administration canceled the registration of 447 trade unions and unions, which for the non-transportation of its compulsory formalities in the central region.
Officials said that this historic decision is a step towards establishing a strong and responsible structure for trade unionism and to increase the credibility of organized labor representation.
An official spokesperson said, “In an important administrative development, aimed at strengthening compliance with statutory labor laws, Labor Commissioner, Charrandip Singh, has ordered to cancel the registration for 447 trade unions and associations.”
He said that this action has been taken after his frequent failure in submitting compulsory annual returns prescribed under the Trade Unions Act, 1926.
He said, “Under Section 28 of the Act, each registered trade union will have to file an audited annual details giving details of its income, expenditure, assets and liabilities.”
He said that despite repeated notices and the availability of a streamlined digital submission system, under the “ease of trade” of the region, they failed to follow unions, they remained inactive for more than a decade, he said.
Singh said, “This action has been taken under Section 10 (B) of the Trade Unions Act, after the fixed process and sufficient notice,” Singh said.
Singh said, “Non-filing of annual returns forms a serious statutory violation and is a sign of prolonged inactivity or termination of operation. We are committed to ensure that only active and accountable unions are recognized in J&K,” Singh said.
Officials said that this historic decision is a step towards setting up a strong and responsible structure for trade unionism that actually protects the interests of workers and enhances the credibility of organized labor representation.
“These cancellations are subject to the result of any pending writ petitions before the competent courts of law,” he said.
