Cairo, Egypt:

Two explosions occurred near a Marshall Islands-flagged liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanker as it sailed off the coast of the Yemeni port city of Hodeida, British security firm Ambrey said on Friday, the third on a commercial ship in the past 48 hours. attack.

Ambrey said the crew of the ship involved in the latest Red Sea incident was until recently owned by the United States.

The captain of a commercial ship in a similar area reported an explosion some distance from the ship’s starboard beam, according to UK Trade Operations Maritime (UKTMO). Reuters could not immediately confirm whether the two reports were the subject of the same ship.

Since mid-November, Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi militants have repeatedly launched drones and missiles at international merchant ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, claiming to express solidarity with Palestinians against Israel’s war in Gaza.

Their attacks have disrupted global shipping, forcing companies to make longer, more expensive journeys around the southern tip of Africa.

There were no reports of damage to ships involved in the early attacks or injuries to crew members.

In response to the shipping attacks, the United States and Britain carried out strikes against Houthi targets.

Late Thursday, the U.S. military said the Houthis fired two anti-ship ballistic missiles from Yemen into the Gulf of Aden and into the Red Sea to the north, but there were no casualties on U.S. or coalition vessels or reports of damage.

The U.S. military’s Central Command said earlier on Friday that it had destroyed nine anti-ship missiles and two drones in areas controlled by Houthi rebels in Yemen.
