Chennai, September 18 (IANS) The recruitment of assistant professors in government art and science colleges in Tamil Nadu has stayed for more than seven years, making a vacuum of about 4,000 sanctioned posts.
The prolonged delay caused by legal obstacles has forced the Higher Education Department to rely a lot on guest lecturers to meet classes of classes.
Currently, 8,000 guest lecturers are working in 171 government art, science and education colleges.
Their number has increased continuously as the state has been unable to appoint a permanent faculty.
Recently, the approval of 15 new government art and science colleges added to the demand, motivated the appointment of more than 570 new guest lecturers, of which 560 have already joined duty.
The issue can be detected on the 2010 commitment by the Department of Higher Education to regularize the services of existing honorary lecturers, a promise that remains incomplete.
Although the department has completed all formalities for the latest recruitment, in which the results, including the state eligibility testing, are still pending before the courts, prevent appointments.
Payment inequality is another major concern. Guest lecturers in Tamil Nadu attract the lowest remuneration in the country, below the assured standards in neighboring and northern states.
While the grant of State University like Kerala, Puducherry, Punjab, Haryana and Delhi provides salary between ₹ 40,000 and ₹ 57,700 per month with the norms of the University University, Tamil Nadu lecturers receive very low.
Long -term uncertainty has pushed over 500 lecturers to register around 54 cases in the Madras High Court and is demanding regularization of its Madurai bench.
Although several favorable regions have been distributed, the state has continued the appeal, which has led to the case unresolved.
Education experts warns that excessive dependence on temporary employees may eventually affect the quality of teaching and research in higher education institutions.
They emphasize the need for immediate recruitment to fill the approved Assistant Professor posts, regularization of eligible lecturers already in service, and long -term measures to prevent such disputes from recurring.
