Former Madrid defender Jonathan Woodgate says it would be a strange decision for the club to sack Alonso at this time.

“I just hope Xabi Alonso keeps his job. There’s no point in appointing a young manager and giving him six months at the biggest club in the world. Zero points,” he explains.

“You might as well hire someone else who is older and a little wiser. You have to stick with Alonso – you have to do that!”

“You brought him from Bayer Leverkusen where he has done an incredible job.

“It would be a shocking decision if they fire him. He just needs to be given time,” he said.

England and Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham last spoke to TNT Sports. Here’s what he said:

“Whatever is happening outside, we are still trying to solve it within the changing room. We know that is not helpful. One thing is how we are managing the game. At certain points where we have to suffer losses, it seems we always concede and it puts us on the backfoot and makes us play the way we don’t want to.

“But in the changing room we have everything we need to turn it around, we just probably need a bit of luck or maybe there is something we need to discuss internally. I am confident that this season will not end just because we are in bad form.”

When asked if the players were behind the manager, he replied: “100 per cent. The manager has been great. I personally have a great relationship with him and I know a lot of the boys do too. After that draw we had some good talks internally and realized we’d put that form behind us in the last few games. Nobody’s downing tools, nobody’s complaining or moaning. We take it on the chin and keep fighting.”

On examining him personally: “It’s just life. This is what I signed up for. I play for one of the biggest clubs in the world. I don’t want pity, I’m living the dream. I roll with the punches and the most important thing for me is this.”

On O’Reilly’s performances, Guardiola says: “Top. It’s hard for him, [with] Rodrigo, what a player, Vinicius, Bellingham, they have pace forward, it’s very dangerous, that’s why you can’t stay high. You have to be committed in defence, we lacked a little bit, but the overall effort was exceptional.

On Haaland: “The numbers speak for themselves. We have to find him more, get him into the game, he wasn’t there in the last one or two games, we have to think about, what can we do to make him more present, but the numbers speak for themselves.

On winning the competition: “We’re away, still we’re not ready. But in February we’ll be better. And of course when you play these types of games, you’re ready to go. We’ve come here and played a lot better in the past and lost, so sometimes football [is like that]It’s always tough to come here, so I take it as it is, but there’s still room for improvement,” he said,

Pep Guardiola just spoke to TNT. Here’s what the Spaniard said:

“Okay, it could be better, of course it is very difficult. It is a process, we have got many new players, but I have to be happy to win here, especially in terms of points, we already have 13. It is within our hands to finish in the top eight, that is the goal, and it is good to win here after what happened in Leverkusen.

“Matthews Nunes played well, Ryan Cherky for the first time [at the Bernabeu]Today he performed brilliantly. i think jeremy [Doku] This was the first, maybe the second, he helped us a lot with many things.

“We started with those mistakes, I always believe that when you have the ball, you can do things, but I was hoping they could press more, they get dropped, and the passes were too loose, which didn’t hurt them.

“It’s okay, we have to improve, we accept that,” he adds.

“We know about their injuries, we have some but they have a lot. You don’t want anyone to get injured but we expected that [Mbappe] To play. I was hoping to go up against Killian today. But when a player like that is out – you are not happy because you want to play the best – but it gives you a bit of a psychological boost.

“You want to play with the best players and after a minute [Raul] Asensio was trying to push me and misbehave with me which I personally like – I don’t mind that. We also had some good battles with Antonio Rudiger, but today he wanted it too much and we got a penalty.

Asked if City could beat Arsenal in the Premier League, he explained: “I don’t like to talk about it too much because we have to focus on ourselves and City have been very good at that for 10 years, don’t think about others and focus on ourselves.

“Now we need to focus on Sunday – who is it? Palace on Sunday – the games are coming fast. Look at the programme, it’s incredible and it’s about staying fit and going game by game and hopefully winning on Sunday”

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland also spoke to TNT Sports:

“It’s hard to come here, it’s a tough place. The game was a little disorganized, we couldn’t really control it. In the end we got the win, [we’re] Very happy.

“This is a place you want to play, these are games you want to play. With this new format in the Champions League you get to play more games which is a good thing. I like it.”

“It could have looked completely different today if we had not won because of the defeat to Leverkusen, this win is really important. There are two more games left. We need to finish strong and hopefully we can finish in the first eight because then we will move on,” he said.

This result takes City to fourth place in the UCL League Stage table with 13 points. They should easily qualify for the top eight, with Bodo/Glimt coming next in Europe.

Madrid are now seventh with 12 points, and they can still make the top eight.

Goalscorer Nico O’Reilly speaks to TNT after the match. He says winning here is a “great feeling”.

“Coming here, what an atmosphere, what a stadium, it is very difficult to come here but we got three points and that is the most important thing.

“Very special – over the moon. This goal will always stay with me but we got three points and that’s the most important thing.”

“I’m loving it, I’m taking every game in stride. Working hard every session and I’m loving it,” he says of his playing time in recent times.

“We know how good Real are, we have played them the last few seasons and they are very good. It shows how well we are playing at the moment and our form. We will have a good chance [to reach the final],

“I was a little slow in the first few minutes, I could have prevented that first goal, but I think I made up for it,” he concluded.
