New Delhi, Nov 10 (IANS) Defense Minister Rajnath Singh will conduct the annual performance review of 16 defense public sector undertakings (DPSUs) in New Delhi on Monday.
Notably, the Defense Minister had earlier declared 2025 as the ‘Year of Reform’, emphasizing the importance of development of new technology by DPSUs and the need to increase exports and indigenization.
To achieve this objective, he called upon them to increase their investment and manpower for research and development.
“Since then, all DPSUs have prepared their R&D roadmap for the next five years. In the last 10 years, a total investment of Rs 30,952 crore has been made in R&D by 16 DPSUs,” the Ministry of Defense (MoD) said in its press note on Saturday.
It is now proposed to double the pace of research and development with an estimated expenditure of Rs 32,766 crore in the next five years. While most of the R&D investment in the last 10 years was made by the older DPSUs, especially Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Bharat Electronics Limited and Bharat Dynamics Limited, the emphasis on R&D has now spread across all DPSUs.
Similarly, over the next five years, the seven new DPSUs formed on corporatization of the Ordnance Factory Board will invest over Rs 3,000 crore for R&D, while the Defense Shipyards plan to invest over Rs 1,300 crore.
“During the programme, a compilation of D&D/R&D projects undertaken in the last 10 years and plan for the next five years will be released. Additionally, HAL’s new R&D manual providing flexibility, speed, risk assessment and allocation in R&D projects will be unveiled.”
The Union Minister will also release a report titled ‘SWAYAM’ on renewable energy.
This report is the first effort undertaken under the aegis of Department of Defense Production to compile the energy efficiency practices of all 16 DPSUs.
It is noteworthy that the performance of DPSU in 2024-25 has been commendable.
The total turnover stood at Rs 1.08 lakh crore, which is 15.4 percent more than in 2023-24. The DPSU reported a cumulative profit after tax of Rs 20,021 crore in 2024-25, registering a growth of 19.5 per cent over the previous year.
Notably, in 2024-25, DPSUs achieved 51 per cent growth in exports compared to the previous financial year.
The event will also feature congratulation to various DPSUs for their remarkable achievements in various fields and exchange of important MoUs.
