New Delhi, Nov 23 (IANS) Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday sparked a fresh debate by suggesting that the Sindh region, which became part of Pakistan during the 1947 partition, could one day come back to India.
Speaking at an event in New Delhi, the Defense Minister underlined India’s deep civilizational ties with Sindh and said geographical boundaries are not permanent.
He said that although Sindh is not within the political boundaries of India today, the region remains an integral part of India’s civilization and cultural memory.
“Geographically, Sindh may not be with us, but civilizationally it has always been a part of India,” he remarked.
He said the borders have changed throughout history, and “who knows, one day Sindh may come back to India.”
Referring to senior BJP leader and former Deputy Prime Minister LK Advani, who hails from Sindh, the Defense Minister said that Sindhi Hindus have never emotionally accepted the separation from their motherland due to Partition.
Quoting BJP leader Advani, Rajnath Singh said many people of that generation still feel a deep sense of displacement and loss.
He also highlighted the shared reverence for the Indus River among various communities.
He underlined the cultural unity that existed before 1947, saying, “For Hindus, the Indus is sacred. And as Advani ji has written, many Muslims in Sindh believed that the river’s water was as sacred as Mecca’s ‘Aab-e-Zamzam’.”
Rajnath Singh reiterated similar sentiments expressed in Morocco on September 22, where he predicted that Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) would eventually become part of India without the need for a military confrontation.
He said that the residents of PoK have already started raising the demand for freedom from the control of Pakistan.
Earlier, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla highlighted the Sindhi community’s strong commitment to service and its deep cultural heritage and said that these qualities have made it an important contributor to India’s social, economic and cultural advancement.
Speaking during the “Strong Society – Prosperous India” event organized by Vishwa Sindhi Hindu Foundation of Association at Vigyan Bhawan, Lok Sabha Speaker Birla lauded the collective strength and resilience of the community, noting that it embodies the same ideals that form the foundation of a strong India.
