A government school teacher posted in Rajasthan’s Baran district has been suspended for disrespecting Goddess Saraswati and hurting religious sentiments, officials said on Saturday.

He said that following the orders of Rajasthan Education Minister Madan Dilawar, primary school teacher Hemlata Bairwa was suspended on Friday.

“Some people value themselves so much, their ‘chaal’ (The working style) is not over yet and they ask what is the contribution of Goddess Saraswati in the school, whoever said this in this area, I suspend him,” Mr Dilawar said during his visit to Kishanganj area. Said while addressing a public meeting in Baran district on Thursday.

A day after the minister’s announcement in public, Baran’s District Education (Elementary) Officer on Friday issued an order to suspend Hemlata Bairwa, a didactic level 1 teacher posted at Government Primary School, Lakdai village in Kishanganj area of Baran district. Disciplinary action is being considered against him.

However, the Baran district education department official claimed that the suspension order was issued after the completion of a preliminary inquiry against the teacher for hurting and inciting religious sentiments.

In the preliminary investigation into the controversy over placing the picture of Goddess Saraswati on the stage during the Republic Day function in the government primary school located in Lakadiya of Kishanganj area, the teacher has been found responsible for hurting and provoking the religious sentiments of the local people. Baran District Education (Elementary) Officer Piyush Kumar Sharma told PTI on Saturday morning that the order of his suspension was issued on Friday.

Mr Sharma said the teacher was also ordered to mark her presence at the Directorate of Elementary Education, Bikaner during this period.

The teacher could have averted the controversy by agreeing with the locals and keeping the picture of Goddess Saraswati and allowing the Republic Day celebrations to go on smoothly, but instead he hurt sentiments and provoked the locals, the official said.

On January 26 this year, during the Republic Day celebrations in the school, there was a dispute between the primary teacher and other villagers. Ms. Bairava refused to put the picture of Goddess Saraswati along with the pictures of Mahatma Gandhi and Bhim Rao Ambedkar on the stage at the function despite the insistence of the local villagers.

The teacher provoked the locals by saying that Goddess Saraswati did not contribute anything to school and education.

On Thursday, two other government teachers were suspended and an inquiry initiated against a third female teacher, from a government senior secondary school in Sangod area of Kota district, for her alleged involvement in ‘love jihad’ and the use of banned Islamic religious texts. For relations with organizations.
