Jaipur, Nov 10 (IANS) Rajasthan Police on Monday issued a warning against a new form of cyber fraud being carried out in the guise of offering dealerships and franchises of reputed brands.
Acting on the instructions of Director General of Police Rajeev Kumar Sharma, the Cyber Crime Branch at the Police Headquarters under the supervision of Additional Director General VK Singh has alerted citizens to beware of such fraudulent schemes.
Deputy Inspector General of Police (Cyber Crime) Vikas Sharma said organized cyber criminal groups are cheating people by promising them dealership or franchise opportunities in well-known companies.
These criminals contact potential victims by posing as senior executives of companies through mobile calls, emails or social media.
They lure people with attractive offers and claim limited availability at dealerships to create a sense of urgency.
Soon after, they demand money in the name of registration fee, security deposit, or no objection certificate fee, asking the victims to deposit the money in specific bank accounts.
Once the money is transferred, the fraudsters stop responding to calls and messages, leaving the victims helpless and duped.
Rajasthan Police has advised citizens to take several precautions to avoid falling victim to such scams.
People should always visit the official website of a company for dealership or franchise details and should not trust advertisements on social media.
If contacted, they must verify the caller’s name, position, and employee ID from official company sources and ensure that all communications are from the official email domain.
The process and documents must be verified in person at the company’s office before any money is transferred.
Payment should be made only into the company’s current account and not into the personal account.
Police also warn that if a deal or benefit seems unusually attractive, it is probably fraudulent.
Deputy Inspector General Vikas Sharma also advised that if anyone becomes a victim of such fraud, they should immediately inform their bank to stop the transaction and report the matter to the nearest police or cyber police station.
He said complaints can also be filed on the cyber crime portal of the Central Government or victims can call the cyber helpline number 1930 and the cyber helpdesk number of Rajasthan Police for assistance.
