Jaipur, Oct 21 (IANS) A mysterious explosion on Diwali spread panic in the Rajasthan State Industrial Development and Investment Corporation Limited (RICO) industrial area of Jaisalmer, located near the India-Pakistan border. Officials gave this information on Tuesday.
The explosion took place in a marble factory and the Indian Army is investigating it.
The incident occurred late on Monday night when a loud explosion shocked the employees and nearby residents.
Arjun Das, a factory worker, initially thought the noise was that of Diwali firecrackers.
However, upon inspection, he noticed a hole in the roof of the tin shed and a small fire burning on the floor.
He extinguished the fire and went to bed, unaware of the seriousness of the situation.
The next morning, Arjundas found a heavy metal object lying on the floor.
The object resembled a shell and was marked “51mm” and “ILLG”.
A parachute was also found nearby, suggesting that the object may have descended slowly before impact.
The panicked employee immediately informed the factory owner, who alerted the local authorities.
Kotwali police officer Premdan Ratanu reached the spot with his team, sealed the area and started a formal investigation.
The object was secured and the Indian Army was called in for expert assessment.
Initial observations suggest the object may be a military illumination sphere – a type of projectile used to illuminate areas during night operations.
However, no official confirmation has been made and officials are awaiting a detailed report from Army experts.
Due to the factory being close to the international border, this incident has raised concern and security agencies are taking it very seriously.
The possibility of cross-border shelling, accidental drift or other military origin is being explored.
Residents of the area are on alert and the administration has urged people to report any suspicious object or activity.
Investigation is going on.
