Jaipur: The Rajasthan government has formed a five-member committee to probe the Jaisalmer bus fire in which 22 people lost their lives and many others were injured.
Additional Transport Commissioner (Administration) and Joint Secretary, Transport and Road Safety Department, OP Bunkar said that after the tragic bus accident in Jaisalmer, the department has started a detailed and sensitive investigation into the matter.
He said that a team from the Regional Transport Office, Jodhpur is currently inspecting the buses manufactured at Jainam Coach Crafter, Jodhpur. So far 66 buses have been seized and are being checked for compliance with the bus body code standards prescribed during their manufacturing.
To ensure a thorough investigation, the Transport and Road Safety Department of the State Government has constituted a five-member high level committee under the chairmanship of Additional Transport Commissioner (Administration) and Joint Secretary.
The committee includes Additional Transport Commissioner (Administration) and Joint Government Secretary (Chairman) Omprakash Bunkar, Regional Transport Officer-II Dharmendra Kumar, Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation Executive Director (Mechanical) Ravi Soni, Joint General Manager, Central Workshop, Jodhpur Hanuman Singh and Navneet Batad Motors Vehicle Inspector, Headquarters. Bunkar said the committee will conduct a comprehensive investigation into the transport, departmental and technical aspects of the Jaisalmer bus accident.
The committee will take the investigation forward. To ensure an independent and expert technical review, the state government has also invited the Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT), Pune, to investigate the incident.
The CIRT team is expected to visit Jaisalmer this weekend and later submit its detailed report to the state government.
The Transport Department has appealed to all bus transport associations to extend full cooperation in the inspection campaign and ensure that buses are operated only after implementing all the necessary safety improvements as per the prescribed standards.
