Jaipur, Nov 4 (IANS) A tragic accident took place in Hardhani village near stepwell in Jodhpur on Tuesday, when two gas cylinders exploded one after the other during preparations for a wedding ceremony, injuring 11 people, including two in critical condition.
According to stepwell outpost in-charge ASI Dharmendra, the blasts took place in a house where wedding preparations were going on.
“While preparations were underway, the cylinder exploded. The injured were taken to hospitals in Jodhpur,” he said.
The injured have been admitted to several hospitals, including nine at Mathuradas Mathur Hospital (MDM) and two at Mahatma Gandhi Hospital (MGH). Three others are undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Bawadi. MDM Hospital Superintendent Dr Vikas Rajpurohit confirmed that most of the injuries were caused by flying iron fragments from the explosion.
He said, “The condition of the injured is stable. The condition of two is critical.” Eyewitness Surta Ram said, “Three or four people were injured in the first blast and were taken to Stepwell Hospital. Soon after, another blast occurred, injuring several people.”
Initial reports suggest that welding work was going on near the cylinder when the first explosion occurred. An injured person told police that the CNG tank or gas cylinder exploded, followed by a loud noise and thick smoke.
This house belonged to farmer Veeram Ram, whose son Mahendra and daughter Gogi were going to get married on 15 and 16 November.
The pieces of the cylinder scattered across the courtyard, injuring people working nearby. Some people were burnt, while others were hit by pieces of metal.
Authorities have begun an investigation into the cause of the explosion, while local authorities have appealed to residents to handle gas cylinders and welding work with caution.
