Incessant rains continue in Tamil Nadu, forcing authorities to close schools and issue flood warnings in several districts. IMD’s Regional Meteorological Center (RMC) in Chennai has issued a red and orange alert warning of extremely heavy rainfall in the coastal region on Wednesday, October 22.

Chennai District Collector Rashmi Siddharth Jagade announced that all schools will remain closed on October 22 due to continuous heavy rains.

According to News18, similar instructions have been issued in Cuddalore, Villupuram and Ranipet, where district collectors have announced holidays for both schools and colleges.

These precautionary closures have been imposed after heavy rainfall is forecast to continue throughout the week.

Red alert in Thanjavur, Nagapattinam and 6 other districts

According to the India Meteorological Department, eight districts including Cuddalore, Ramanathapuram, Thanjavur and Nagapattinam are on red alert on October 22.

The weather agency has predicted extremely heavy rainfall in the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu on October 22.

According to B Amudha, Director, RMC, Chennai, fishermen have been strictly advised to avoid venturing into the sea from October 22 to 25, news agency ANI reported.

Incessant heavy rains have caused severe waterlogging and traffic jams in many areas, especially in Madurai, where flood warnings have been issued.

The red alert was triggered after a sharp rise in the water level of Vaigai river was observed following heavy rains in its catchment areas.

Waterlogging was also seen in Puducherry, Pudukottai and Karaikal areas.

Government is reviewing precautionary measures

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin held a review meeting with officials to assess the preparedness for the current monsoon conditions.

Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin also conducted a field inspection in Chennai to monitor the preventive measures being implemented to reduce flood hazards.

RMC warned that widespread rainfall is likely to continue over many districts in the coming days as the northeast monsoon intensifies across Tamil Nadu.
