Chennai, Nov 3 (IANS) The Regional Meteorological Center (RMC) in Chennai has predicted moderate rain in the city and its suburbs over the next two days, while maximum temperatures are expected to rise above normal levels in many parts of Tamil Nadu.
According to the latest bulletin issued by the RMC, a change in wind pattern – especially strengthening of easterly winds – is likely to cause light to moderate rainfall at isolated places over Chennai and adjoining districts.
The weather office said a fresh low pressure system has formed over east-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining Myanmar coast, which is likely to move north-northwestwards towards Myanmar and Bangladesh coasts in the coming days.
Although the system is not expected to have a direct impact on Tamil Nadu, the associated moisture intrusion and changes in upper air circulation may cause isolated rainfall over coastal and interior areas including Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur and Kanchipuram districts.
The department further cautioned that the maximum temperature in some parts of the state may remain 3-4 degrees Celsius above the seasonal average.
On Monday, day temperatures are likely to reach 37-38 degrees Celsius in districts like Tiruchirappalli, Madurai, Salem and Vellore, while coastal areas including Puducherry and Karaikal may also record a significant increase in heat.
In Chennai, weather experts said the city may receive brief but intense rain during late evening or night, along with thunder and lightning in some areas.
The maximum temperature in the city is expected to be around 35 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature may be around 26 degrees Celsius.
A senior RMC meteorologist said the northeast monsoon, which became active over Tamil Nadu last week, is currently in a weak phase due to changes in pressure areas. “The new low pressure system over the Bay may gradually revive rain activity over coastal Tamil Nadu after a short gap,” the official said.
Residents have been advised to remain alert to sudden changes in weather and avoid waterlogging on roads during light rains.
