Guwahati, Oct 17 (IANS) Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi will visit Assam on Friday to pay tribute to late cultural icon Zubeen Garg, whose untimely death in Singapore has plunged the state into mourning and triggered a high-profile investigation.
According to the official program released by the Congress, Gandhi will reach Sonapur on the outskirts of Guwahati at 1.30 pm and offer floral tributes to the singer, who is fondly remembered as Zubeen Da across the Northeast.
Later, he will personally visit Garg’s family at their residence in Kahilipara at around 2.30 pm and express his condolences.
The Congress leader’s visit is expected to be a deeply emotional moment for fans and admirers of the late musician, whose influence spans languages and generations.
Party sources said Gandhi’s tribute reflected his respect for the cultural heritage of Assam and solidarity with the people mourning the demise of one of their most beloved voices.
Zubeen Garg, a brilliant singer, composer and actor, passed away under mysterious circumstances in Singapore on September 19. His death sparked widespread mourning across Assam and protests demanding a fair and transparent investigation.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the Assam government is probing the case, which has already seen several high-profile arrests and cross-border coordination with Singapore authorities.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently announced that the SIT is expected to file its chargesheet by November, and the government will seek a fast-track court to expedite the trial.
Rahul Gandhi’s visit comes at a time when emotions are running high in the state, with Garg’s fans and fellow artistes demanding justice and a bandh.
His gesture is likely to resonate widely among the youth and cultural community of Assam, for whom Zubeen Garg remains an enduring symbol of artistic pride and regional identity.
