Kolkata, 24 September (IANS) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday expressed condolences to families who lost their members in the city due to electrocution after night record rains in Kolkata.
Using his X handle, Gandhi said, “My views are with people from other parts of Kolkata and West Bengal as they tolerate the destruction caused by continuous rains and floods. Heartfelt condolences to families who have lost their loved ones.”
He also asked the Congress workers in Bengal to give their support to the affected people. He said, “I urge Congress workers to expand all possible support, and request the state and central government to work fast to help restore the general situation,” he said.
Meanwhile, CPI (M) general secretary MA Baby also said that he was “deeply unhappy” due to heavy rains in Kolkata and electrocution during floods.
Like Gandhi, the CPI (M) general secretary appealed to party employees and sympathizers to help the affected people.
The child said in a post on X, “More than 10 people lost their lives in Kolkata due to electrocution amid heavy rains and floods.
On Tuesday, the price of one month of rain in just five hours, combined with a high tide in the Hooghly River during the heaviest rainfall period, resulted in widespread waterlogging across the city. About 10 people were electrocated in West Bengal, including eight in Kolkata. Train services, metro services were disrupted, while the traffic in Kolkata was completely paralyzed as almost every road was carried out.
The situation has improved on Wednesday morning.
The Met Office recorded 252 mm of rain in five hours, with 185 mm down between 2.30 pm and 5.30 pm.
According to KMC data, Geria was the most spectacular with 332 mm of rain, followed by Jodhpur Park in 285 mm, Balliganj at 264 mm, Altadanga at 207 mm and Manatila at 169 mm.
