He said that the Upper House has a lot of work to do and this time will be a challenging factor for both the members and the Speaker.
Radhakrishnan, in his maiden remarks in the Upper House, said, “Everyone, be it the Chairman or a member, we must all understand our responsibilities towards the nation. The Constitution of India, along with the rule books of the Rajya Sabha, sets the Lakshman Rekha for parliamentary discussion. The rights of every individual member must be ensured, but within the Lakshman Rekha. I will always do my best to protect all your just claims.”
He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and all other members of the House for honoring him on the first day of the winter session of Parliament.
He said that parliamentary practices and procedures like Question Hour, Zero Hour and Special Mentions provide ample opportunities to every member to raise important issues and concerns of citizens in the House.
Radhakrishnan said, “Let us commit to ensuring that our actions inside this House reflect the aspirations of every farmer, every worker, every street vendor, every woman and youth and the poorest of the poor who look up to Parliament with great hope. We need to fulfill our constitutional commitment towards social justice and economic empowerment of the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Backward Classes and other weaker sections of the society.”
