Montreal-Quebec’s language Watchdog has supported after trying to get a famous Montreal pub to change its signal.
The language office instructed Pub Burgundy Lion to add French language to its indication as “Burgundy” is an English word.
But co-owner Toby Lyl publicly argued that the name is a sign for a Montreal neighborhood commonly called its English name-litel Burgundy.
The Watchdog now states that further analysis suggests that the pub’s signage is in line with the language rules of Quebec.
It states that the situation is “regrettable” and is sensitive to public reaction that the story has provoked.
The incident is the second highly promoted reversal in the language office in recent months, when Watchdog decided to allow this spring to encourage the word “Go” to encourage sports teams.
