Chandigarh, Nov 14 (IANS) Punjab Police has busted an interstate counterfeit currency module with the arrest of two persons from Dera Bassi and seized fake and counterfeit currency worth Rs 9.99 crore from their possession, Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said here on Friday.
The arrested people have been identified as Sachin and Gurdeep, residents of Kurukshetra, Haryana.
The recovery includes genuine old currency worth Rs 11,05,000 and fake currency worth Rs 9.88 crore. Apart from recovering the currency, the police teams have also seized their white Scorpio-N in which they were travelling.
DGP Yadav said preliminary investigation revealed that the accused were adopting fraudulent methods to defraud persons by placing genuine notes on top of the bundles and hiding fake notes inside. He is linked to several cases of fraud and forgery in the states of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan.
The DGP said that technical analysis and further interrogation is underway to identify the entire network and identify other associates involved in this module.
Sharing operational details, Senior Superintendent of Police (SAS Nagar) Harmandeep said that a tip-off was received about the movement of two persons linked to the interstate fake currency module.
Special teams were formed under the supervision of Superintendent of Police (Rural) Manpreet Singh and DSP (Dera Bassi) Bikramjit Singh Brar.
Acting swiftly, teams led by SHO (Dera Bassi) Sumit Mor and in-charge Anti-Narcotics Cell Malkit Singh set up a special checkpoint near the PWD rest house at Ghaggar bridge on the old Ambala-Kalka highway and stopped the duo and recovered fake and old notes from their possession.
The SSP further said that investigation has revealed that the arrested accused have defrauded many people in Punjab and neighboring states and have a criminal background with involvement in prior cases of fraud and counterfeit currency.
He said more arrests and seizures are likely in the coming days as the investigation continues.
