Chandigarh, Oct 11 (IANS) Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said here on Saturday that in an intelligence-led operation, the Counter Intelligence (CI) Amritsar has busted a cross-border arms smuggling module linked to Pakistan with the arrest of three of its operatives and recovered eight sophisticated pistols from their possession.
The arrested have been identified as Mahesh and Angrez Singh, residents of Madhi Megha village in Tarn Taran; And Arshdeep Singh, resident of Bhikhiwind, Tarn Taran.
The recovered weapons included three 9mm pistols with magazines and five .30 bore pistols. Besides this, the police have also seized his motorcycle being used to transport the consignment.
DGP Yadav said preliminary investigation revealed that the accused were acting on the instructions of a Pakistan-based arms smuggler who was using drones to drop contraband from across the border.
He said, they were supplying arms and ammunition to criminals and gangsters in Punjab with the intention of promoting criminal activities in the state.
Sharing operation details, he said that CI Amritsar had received a specific intelligence regarding the recovery of a huge consignment of illegal weapons from the India-Pakistan border, which was transported from across the border with the help of drones in the area of Madhi Kamboke village in Tarn Taran district.
Acting swiftly, a police team intercepted three suspects near Bhuse village in Amritsar Rural and recovered a consignment of illegal weapons, which they were going to deliver to the next party in the area, he said.
The DGP said the accused men, Mahesh and Angrez Singh, were also wanted in previous cases registered under the Arms Act at a police station in Amritsar, in which five pistols were previously recovered.
The DGP said that further investigation is going on in this case to establish links and dismantle the entire network.
