Punjab DGP says gangsters should be dealt with iron hands

Chandigarh, September 30 (IANS) Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said on Tuesday that all officers have been given an independent hand to deal with gangsters and anti -social elements.

He warned, “The rank of a constable for the SSP (Senior Superintendent of Police) will determine the accountability of each officer and no laxity on gangsters and drug fronts will be tolerated,” he warned.

The DGP was chaired by a state level law and order virtual meeting of all senior officers till the rank of Station House officials to prepare a comprehensive action plan in the run-up for the festive season. The DGP instructed him to be fully cautious and committed to ensure peace, harmony and safety of all citizens.

Additional Director General of Police (Anti-Gangter Task Force-AGTF) ​​Promod Ban and ADGP (Counter Intelligence) Amit Prasad were among other senior officials who attended the meeting.

On the drug front, the DGP praised the force for the commendable work done under the ‘Yudh Nasian Veerukh’ anti-drugs campaign, resulting in an 87 percent of the punishment rate in NDP cases. He emphasized the need for a professional investigation to identify the source of the consignment and install a linkage to reach the ‘big fish’. He directed that the seized mobile phones of notorious suppliers should be sent for forensic analysis to highlight and further arrest the chain.

The DGP also asked the authorities to make a maximum use of Section 64-A of the NDPS Act, which provides an opportunity to the drug consumer caught with some gram heroin or drug powder for rehabilitation. He appreciated the work on Safe Punjab Anti-Drags Chatbot, which has seen 33-35 percent first information report (FIR) conversion rate, and has seriously obtained and developed them to get public inputs received on it.

To deal with the important issue of lack of employees, the DGP said that the government has created 1,600 posts, including 150 inspectors, 450 sub-inspectors and 1,000 assistant sub-inspectors who can be filled through promotion.

Reviewing the organized crime scenario, DGP Gaurav Yadav asked the police officers to identify gangsters’ associates and put them behind bars. “You have full safety and support from the department. Practice the gangsters fearlessly,” he said.
