Chandigarh, Nov 6 (IANS) Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh, who was summoned for allegedly making casteist remarks against former Union Home Minister Buta Singh, did not appear before the State Scheduled Caste Commission earlier this week citing his engagement in the Raja Warring Tarn Taran assembly bypoll.
However, his lawyer appeared but failed to submit the power of attorney (vakalatnama) during the proceedings.
Raja Waring, who was booked by the police, sought exemption from personal appearance and asked for a new date after the elections are over.
Meanwhile, the District Election Officer-cum-Deputy Commissioner of Tarn Taran has also sought exemption from appearing before the Commission.
Providing details to the media, Commission Chairman Jasvir Singh Gadhi said the District Election Officer informed him through a formal communication that a letter had been issued to Raja Waring seeking clarification in the matter, which is currently being verified by the police.
He said that the District Election Officer has requested for exemption from attendance on November 6 due to the ongoing by-election in the constituency.
Accepting the request, the Commission has given time till 17th November.
Garhi said that as per media reports, Kapurthala police has registered an FIR against Raja Waring.
Taking cognizance of this, the Commission has asked for a copy of the report regarding the action taken so far from the Senior Superintendent of Police, which will be submitted by November 10.
The case against Raja Waring was registered on the basis of a complaint by Buta Singh’s son Sarabjot Singh Sidhu.
They have been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Code of Justice (BNS) 2023 as well as sections 3(1)(u) and 3(1)(v) of the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989.
The state Congress chief, MP from Ludhiana, had reportedly commented on the late politician’s skin color while campaigning in support of the party’s candidate for the November 11 assembly by-election.
