Chandigarh, Nov 5 (IANS) Punjab Police on Wednesday filed a First Information Report (FIR) against state Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Waring for allegedly making casteist remarks against former Union Home Minister late Buta Singh.
This case was registered on the basis of the complaint of Sarabjot Singh Sidhu, son of Buta Singh.
They have been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Code of Justice (BNS) 2023 as well as sections 3(1)(u) and 3(1)(v) of the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989.
The Congress chief, who is MP from Ludhiana, had reportedly commented on the skin color of the late politician while campaigning in support of the party’s candidate for the Tarn Taran assembly by-election to be held on November 11.
Facing criticism, Raja Waring has clarified that late Buta Singh was a father figure, and he would “never disrespect him or anyone else”.
Responding to reports that the Punjab State Scheduled Caste Commission had taken ‘suo motu’ cognizance of the issue and issued summons to him, Waring has said, “However, I confirm and reiterate that it was not my intention to disrespect Late Sardar Buta Singh-ji. If anyone has been offended, I apologize unreservedly.”
Waring has clarified that whatever he mentioned about late Buta Singh was in a positive context to highlight the “inclusive” nature of the Congress.
Waring reiterated, “While I hold him in the highest regard as a great leader and father figure to me, I apologize unreservedly if anyone was offended.”
The National Commission for Scheduled Castes on Tuesday issued a notice to the Tarn Taran Deputy Commissioner and Senior Superintendent of Police regarding Waring’s “casteist comments” during an election rally in the district.
Taking suo motu cognizance of a news report based on BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh’s statement on the incident, the commission asked the district authorities to submit an action taken report within seven days of receiving the notice.
