Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann gave an impromptu singing performance during the ‘At Home’ function organized at Raj Bhawan here on the occasion of Republic Day celebrations on Friday.
Maan enthralled the audience with his rendition of famous singer Gurdas Maan’s ‘Chhalla’.
The Chief Minister, who had clashed with the Punjab Governor on various issues in the past, went to Banwarilal Purohit after his performance who clapped for Mann and told him, “You have done wonders”. During his performance, Mann said ‘ Chhalla’ Gaya’, a Punjabi folk song.
The Chief Minister told the Governor, “You created such an environment that the artist within me could not control myself.”
After Mann finished his performance, dignitaries sitting in the audience, including Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan, Chandigarh MP Kirron Kher and Additional Solicitor General of India Satyapal Jain, applauded the chief minister.
There were differences between Purohit and Mann on several issues, including holding of assembly sessions and appointments of vice-chancellors. Purohit also objected to Mann calling his official letters “love letters”.
Mann’s presence at the ‘at home’ event organized by Raj Bhavan is significant as he had not attended such an event on Independence Day last year. “The Chief Minister chose not to attend the ‘at home’ function.
Their decision is in accordance with their own understanding. The Chief Minister has probably decided not to organize this event. Perhaps he is afraid of the ceremonial cannons placed outside the Raj Bhavan,” Purohit had taken a dig at Mann when he was absent from the ‘at home’ reception organized on Independence Day in 2023.
