The Punjab Police said on Tuesday that fourteen people have died and six others have died and six others have been admitted to the hospital after consuming illegal liquor in five villages under Majita block in Amritsar.
Police said the chief distributor or kingpin was arrested in the incident on the night of 12 May.
Majitha Amritsar Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sohani said, “There is an unfortunate tragedy in Majita. We came to know last night, we got a report from five villages that those who consume alcohol tomorrow are in critical condition. We have run our medical teams. Our medical team is still going door-to-door.”
“Whether people have some symptoms or not, we are taking them to the hospital so that we can save them. 14 people have died so far. The governance is making all help possible.
The police have arrested four other people in connection with the case as they were involved in the distribution of illegal liquor to the villagers in Majita. An FIR has been lodged under Section 105 of the Indian Justice (BNS) and 61A of the Excise Act.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Amritsar (Rural) Maninder Singh said that the main accused has been identified as Prabhjeet Singh. Police said the other people who have been arrested in this case are: Kulbir Singh alias Jaggu, the brother of the chief distributor, Sahib Singh alias Sarai, Gurjant Singh and Ninder Kaur.
“We came to know around 9:30 pm last night that people here started dying after consuming special liquor. We immediately took action and scored four people.
He said that the police have registered two FIRs against the manufacturers and distributors, booking them under strict sections. The SSP claimed that the police would busted the entire distribution network.
He said that the incident took place in five villages, and the civil administration, along with the police, is going door -to -door to find more people, who have consumed illegal liquor to avoid further casualties.
“The manufacturers will be scored soon. Two FIRs have been registered under stringent sections. We aim to bust the entire distribution network.
